On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the law recognizing the slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity, and the twentieth anniversary of its opening, the Maison de l’Armateur welcomes two artists: Emmanuelle Gall, whose ancestors were enslaved, and Ari Hamot, a descendant of the family that once owned the house. They propose to “haunt” certain rooms: to awaken and reveal the memory of this site, a witness to Le Havre’s involvement in the slave trade.
Their works occupy hidden spaces in order to make a suppressed or erased past perceptible, and to honor invisible and sacrificed lives. An invitation to collectively rethink the history of slavery and its resonances in contemporary society.
Emmanuelle Gall is a writer and visual artist, and Ari Hamot is a performer and scenographer. After participating in the Rouen section of the trilogy Esclavage, mémoires normandes in 2023, Emmanuelle Gall was invited to design a project for the Maison de l’Armateur. She chose to share an unprecedented artistic and human experience with Ari Hamot, which will conclude with a performative tour of the Maison de l’Armateur during the European Heritage Days.
The exhibition Reminiscences received support from the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage.
