Place de l'Hôtel de ville

Discovery tour: From a garden to another

The Town Hall Square is, by its dimensions (243 x 192 meters), one of the largest in Europe. The city having been rebuilt on the levelled ruins, the square and its gardens are symbolically located at the level of the city's ground before the bombing. The openwork concrete fences surrounding the square were designed by Auguste Perret.

Low buildings of 3 floors (classified as Historic Monuments) surmounted by commercial entresol and punctuated by 6 towers of 10 floors, frame the square. It is also around the square that the first four reconstruction blocks were built between 1946 and 1950: these are Immeubles Sans Affectation Individuelle (I.S.A.I), pre-financed by the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urbanism and then acquired by the victims of war damage. These I.S.A.I allowed the prefiguration of the architectural elements that were used to build the whole of the city center.
