Square Claude Érignac
from 25 June  to 18 September

Discovery tour: Waterside

First installed on Avenue Foch in Le Havre in 2019, the Narrow House is back to settle permanently in Square Érignac.

The wooded, landscaped park offers a garden for this typical suburban house of the 70s, whose narrowness appears all the more distinct.

Several versions of this work have existed; this is the first whose interior can be visited, and which is placed in the public space. All the items and furniture that furnish it seem to have been compressed, stretched. As you progress further between its walls, more rooms are added until they become too narrow to enter.

The photographs visible on certain walls give us a clue about its occupants; the house is a memory of Erwin Wurm, and as often happens in the works of the Austrian artist, the shape of the clothes, cars and houses seems to humorously express the psychology of their occupants.

"It was my parents' house. I recreated it in a narrow, crushed down version. To reflect narrow society, the claustrophobia of our suburbs and our minds. Again, I use humour and the absurd to make people think about the world we live in. I’m concerned about our future. Politically, I find the air unbreathable. Ecologically, it's scary. On the other hand, I don't want to go directly into the political arena. My role is to create images, thoughts." Erwin Wurm
