Architect : Paul-Michel Thibault

Built at the end of the 18th century by architect Paul-Michel Thibault for his own use, this astonishing building was later purchased by Le Havre-based merchant ship-owner Martin-Pierre Foäche. He commissioned well-known architect Pierre-Adrien Pâris to create the wooden and sculpted features. The mansion’s originality lies in its interior layout with its twenty-five rooms, built on five stories, positioned around a central shaft of light.

The Maison de l’Armateur is now the city museum, retracing the life of a family of merchants in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. With its lounges, curiosity cabinets and old scale models, it takes visitors back to that special time in Le Havre’s history when everyday life and the port’s activities were closely intertwined.
