Discovery tour: From a garden to another

We owe this architectural UFO to Oscar Niemeyer, who built ex-nihilo Brasilia, the capital of his country. UFO, because beyond its strangeness, the building required quasi-spatial skills: to erect these complex forms and without visible framework, it was necessary to use a computer program derived from a calculation method developed by NASA.

Its sensual curves contrast with the right angles that Auguste Perret's city has made its signature. Located in the extension of the Bassin du Commerce, in place of the Grand-Théâtre, which disappeared under the bombs in 1944, Le Volcan consists of two "craters" rising from a forum square. Their bases located at four meters below the ground, they are reached by a set of ramps and stairs. The "Grand Volcan", the largest of the craters, now houses an 800-seat national stage, while the "Petit Volcan" houses a 5,000 m2 library. An essential cultural facility inaugurated in 2015.
