‘The altoviseur is a building accessory. An object that is familiar yet incongruous.
Positioned above a building, the giant mirror draws the pedestrian’s gaze up to the city’s skyline. A skyline for everyone, a strong contrast with the usual urban property privileges or social topography.
Many films open with an aerial view, setting the scene for the action to come (and sometimes as a means of showcasing the city that has funded the film). This technique also influences the way we approach the characters’ psychology, as if to remind us that the place we live in is never unconnected with the construction of our personality.
Positioned above the station, one of the gates into the city, the panoramic altoviseur serves the same function, introducing us to the decor and the fictions played out here.’
