OPENING YOUR MIND TO ALIEN LIFE FORMS
Temporary work of artHistoric tour
Light art installation on the chimneys of the EDF power plant visible at night and from distance.
La Sprite is a luminous, dancing, and bouncing artificial creature living in the chimneys of the Le Havre EDF power plant. Animated by a computer programme connected in real time to the local weather forecast, this creature is very moody. Happy, energetic, sad, edgy, tired, relaxed... it draws its energy from the sky and the natural elements that surround it : rain, wind, and earth.
Coming to life at dusk, it leaps from one chimney to the other like a ghost, or rather a « sprite ». This word is used to describe a supernatural creature associated with water or wind, such as a fairy or an elf. It is also the name of a meteorological phenomenon used to describe upper-atmospheric lightning, or that of a graphic image of an object or character which can be moved on a screen, in the field of computer programming.
The relentless movement of this pixelated critter composed of several hundreds of light points is unique and ever-changing. In constant interaction with the architecture of its habitat, this digital creature lives halfway between two worlds : the tangible and intangible. Its animal and organic behaviour is an invitation to a primitive, intuitive, and non-verbal form of communication.
Check the moon calendar carefully… La Sprite is not only sensitive to the weather, it is also sensitive to moon phases. When the moon phase changes, La Sprite is particularly moody.
476 LEDs split between both chimneys, covering over 78 metres from the top of the chimneys.
Visible over 360° from over 50 km away, depending on weather conditions.
