Chiharu Shiota was born in 1972 in Osaka, Japan and she has been living in Berlin since 1997. Her signature theme is “Existence in the Absence” where she confronts the meaning of life through memory conveyed in collected objects around the globe. Her large-scale installations placed her in the international art scene using thread as a means of exploring human relationships and their sense of belonging.
Her work has been presented worldwide in museums and galleries such as: K21 - Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (2015), Smithsonian Institution Arthur M.Sackler Gallery, Washington, D.C., USA (2014), the Museum of Art, Kochi, Japan (2013) as well as the Biennale of Sydney (2016) and Setouchi International Art Festival, Japan (2010).
She represented the Japan Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia in 2015.
